The allegory of Christian Rozenkreuz is fascinating. At the heart of Rosicrucianism stands a story of an ideal man's life, death, and eternal preservation. Steeped in alchemical symbolism, the tomb of ol' Chrissy is a veritable vault of initiatory lore[1]. Like Christian Rozenkreuz, a mythical figure stands at the origins of Maergzjirah. Sybastien Drujziya[2]. Or Sebastian, if you prefer[3]. Razarith and Muldegrin each spell the name differently.
Sybastien was a Romani (I will not be using the G---- word, as it is a racial slur) living in Hungary, where his people were persecuted by the Inquisition. After losing those he loved, he was approached by the Dark God, Chernobog. Chern made a pact with Sybastien, granting him the power to massacre his enemies and restore his family. And everyone lived darkly ever after [3,4]. Here's the first problem. Drujziya is not a Hungarian last name [5]. Drujziya is not a Romani last name [6]. Drujziya is not a last name at all; it's a Google Translate Romani-to-English for the word "Friendship" [7]. There are no Wikipedia entries for Drujziya. This person was invented.
Sybastien Drujziya's nemesis was a bad hombre by the name of Frà Giacomo [4]. Muldegrin's tome has Giacomo's title as "the Supreme Inquisitor of the Austrian /Hungarian Inquisition" [3]. Well that's handy! A historical figure like that should be easy to find. Not entirely. There is no Fra Giacomo mentioned in the Wikipedia for the Inquisition, which does helpfully list a Fransician operating in Hungary during a similar time frame named Jacobo de la Marcha [8]. The same article mentions that most Hungarian inquisition cases were resolved by reconciliation. This means that it's highly, highly unlikely that the massacres mentioned in Maergzjiran lore occurred. Frà Giacomo and the massacre of the Drujziyas was invented.
There's one more element to the story: Chernobog. Chernobog is a real Slavic deity with a history outside of the Maergzjiran mythology. He is the Black God. Somnus introduces him with: "Drifting into the abysmal darkness, and the Blighted Lords having gone silent, they were forgotten about until in the 1100’s when the Black God, Cernobog revealed himself to the Drujziya tribe" [4]. In Slavic lore, Chernobog is the god of bad luck. They allegedly praised Chernobog so that he would not visit misfortune upon them [9].
So here we have an authentic deity from history! How did Somnus get his hands on him, and rework him into a god-king? As I've pointed out before in my analysis of the Tower of Cressen, Somnus was an avid gamer. And there was a dark, edgy game released in the last 90's where Chernobog made an appearance. A game where Chernobog led a group of cultitsts called The Cabal, who worked black magic. That game is the FPS Blood, a classic on the Build Engine [10, 11]. This god was re-invented, workshopped into a new mythology.
Christian Rozenkreuz was not a real person. Neither was Sybastien Drujziya. The difference is whether or not we allow ourselves to develop and immerse ourselves in a deep system of spiritual, magical, and psychological symbology, or in a power fantasy. Sybastien can be re-invented, as Christian was in The Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz. The current utility of Sybastien is minimal. He helped Somnus Dreadwood sell books. He helped Muldegrin legitimize his claim to ownership of a splinter sect of Maergzjirah, where he sells "cosmic enslavement" for $250 a pop [12]. He can change, or he can be discarded. But he is of no use to any honest practitioner in this state. Rebuild the allegory, or kill him.
